NWARK locals, Open Addiction, impress with onstage debut at album release

Weekend Review: Open Addiction album release @ Club Rush (Fayetteville, Ark)

One of my favorite parts of doing Surviving Rocklahoma is the exposure to fresh bands emerging in our area. Open Addiction is no different! This group reached out to me several weeks ago via the submission e-mail (SurvivingRocklahoma@Gmail.com). I was blown away by their sound for being so young as a group. This led me down a trip that was very much worth my while

Justin of Open Addiction tells me he’s been singing and playing music for years with various groups. In recent years, Justin – Vocals/Guitar, has come together with Alex – Guitar, Mikey – Guitar, John – Bass, and Luis – Drums. Together Justin’s booming full vocals are rounded out by the layering of the accompanying ensemble that each have their own flayer with their contribution.

After a well-received feature on Surviving Rocklahoma Live, I was able to make it down to Fayetteville, Arkansas’ Club Rush Hookah & Cigar Lounge for the band’s album release party. “Tribulation” dropped on Feb 19th.

My first impression of Club Rush was very much a pleasant one. I will say, it is a little hard to find. But the best places to find local music are. Any time I visit places like these, I like to network and get a feel for who makes these things happen. And on that note, I want to pay a huge kudos to Spida Verse and Christie Walker for their respective parts in putting this on as well as their tireless hours and energy they continually put into promoting local artists of all mediums, especially local music. After feeling the energy and excitement from these two as well as the various artists in 1Hundred Proof, LEONA, Endfall, and (of course) Open Addiction. Energized, brew in hand, and my camera in tow, I navigate towards the stage as the first band begins to play.

1HundredProof

1Hundred proof was a load of fun. These guys have a great sense of humor and a lot of chemistry. This started the night off right with some impressive riffs and shredding. Which fed the atmosphere with laughs, drinks, and amplified rock and roll. The brick walls of the venue all but contained the metal within. Many passers-by took notice and continued to join as the band finished up their set with what drew me back inside from the club’s comfortable patio deck. One of their final songs was a ska track that visibly got several of the ladies and their dates moving.

Leona

With mood right, mind right, and my middle-aged joints cracked and limbered up, it’s time for my introduction to LEONA. Let’s crank this up a notch.

And that we did. Leona blends dualling vocals with adrenaline-fueled instrumentals. The crowd was here for it. A few were feeling the metalcore vibe enough to start clearing some room to get the crowd warmed up. This persisted as the night pressed on to prime time hours as the streets began to fill with those seeking the nightlife and the crowd began to swell steadily.

Endfall

After a short break, Endfall took the stage, to my delight as a frequent member of their audiences. The quartet was at home in the cozy setting as they do many a recording and filming in houses which can be seen on their YouTube channel.

The great thing about this group is that they fit together so well that they are able to roll with whatever may go their way. As the crowd continued to marvel at what was going on in the stage lights, a few were so moved that they mistakenly moved to the backstage, rather than the backseat, “If ya know what I mean”. This might normally be something that could go unnoticed and normally wouldn’t be mentioned, had there been any sort of “backstage” to speak of. Seeing how the stage scrim was sheer, their activities caught the attention of others and security quickly had them heading towards a more comfortable setting, Endfall in love. Like, true professionals, the band went on to conclude with a healthy vocal reception from the audience.

Open Addiction

Open Addiction came to the stage to prepare for their debut. Not only their debut album but their on-stage debut. After enjoying the night with friends, family, music lovers, and those lured in from outside, Justin welcomed the crowd and introduced himself as well as his musical brothers. And he proclaims, “Let’s Go”.

The guys are comfortable together. There’s strength in their music that is apparent in their performance. They share the space well, the drumset is impressive, with a wide range of metal to lend to whatever musical direction the band goes. They showed range, stamina, and chemistry. This allows the emotion that is clearly powering the stories being shared. Seeing them perform I feel like they will be forward, and upward.

I felt the group blended together as well on stage as they do musically. Their sound and style are clear. Their singles, “Throw It Away” and “I Want You” demonstrate a layering of musical elements to give a rich experience that doesn’t overwhelm the casual listener’s ear. An emotionally charged musical journey, I’m in. The latter carries a more melancholy swing established with a somber piano with a swirling storm atop of it. The new album is one I definitely suggest. “Tribulation” will be a solid addition to your playlist. It’s in mine.
